NVEY ECO Introduces First Line of Compostable Makeup Brushes

OK, so your clothes are all made from organic materials, you eat vegan, your makeup is even made from all natural minerals, but what the tools you use to apply your organic products all over your eco-friendly body? Like most people out there, you probably haven’t even considered how to green that detail of your beauty routine. Luckily, someone else has thought about it for you. Launching this month from the makers of all-natural makeup line NVEY ECO, are a brand new line of compostable and recyclable makeup brushes.

From the handle to the bristles, every part of these brushes can be broken down after you’re done with them. The handles are 100% compostable, made from a special corn resin that can be dropped in the soil to break down in your backyard, contributed to a local industrial composting center (soon searchable on www.econveybeauty.com), or returned to the NVEY ECO main office in Covington, KY to have them do the work for you, and to get 20% off future orders. The green aluminum metal piece and cruelty-free synthetic fibers can be cut off and recycled with your bottles and cans.

With every piece of your makeup and brushes now completely earth-friendly, no one ever has to know you even wear makeup. I mean, you’re perfect already, right? Yeah, of course you are.

Looptworks Introduces the Weilong Travel Bag Just In Time for Summer Biking!

One of the hardest things about riding your super cute cruiser around town in the summer definitely isn’t getting from A to B. It’s finding the perfect bag to throw over your shoulder that won’t slip in front of you while you’re riding like a traditional handbag, but will hopefully look a bit cuter than your old high school backpack. Thankfully, Looptworks has just released a bag that will surely meet all the necessary criteria to complete your summer cycling style.

Using excess durable, water-resistant nylon fabric rescued from China, the Weilong Travel Bag is made from completely upcycled materials that otherwise would have gone to waste. With two summer color options to choose from right now – Green Zebra/Planet of the Grapes (shown above) and Orange/Floral Print- you don’t get a lot of choices, but there are more coming in the fall. Each bag has an adjustable strap so you can tighten it for your ride, then loosen it when you’re just walking about. They also come standard with a leashed coin purse combined with a cell phone patch pocket and a zipped lined pocket, so nothing will tumble out while you’re riding and you can keep the necessities handy without getting lost in the jumble of other things you can fit in there.

Laura Lombardi Jewelry

Laura Lombardi’s beautiful jewelry pieces are a complete rarity for a number of reasons.

#1: Like I said, they’re beautiful. And I mean like every single piece. Her collections aren’t the kind of thing where you pick and choose a few pieces that you like, but try to forget about the rest. Instead, it’s hard to choose just one favorite (or 5 or 10 for that matter). Some of the necklaces and earrings are simple and sleek, while others drape several layers of intricate metal. There is not set formula to them and that’s one of things about them.

#2: She uses almost entirely repurposed or vintage materials in order to make every piece, but you’d never know it. They look just as high end as anything hand-crafted from brand new metals. In her own words: “Sourcing components that spark my interest is the first part of my process…. My inclination in both art and design has always been to start with objects that are already in existence and present them in a new context.”

#3: They’re affordable! Hold the presses everyone. You can actually purchase these and not break the bank, even in this economy. You could – if you shop just right – purchase 3 completely different pieces and not even break $100 total. And your friends won’t know the difference. You’ll own several amazingly unique pieces of jewelry that no one else you know will have and you’ll probably garner tons of attention for them. And you can still afford your rent!

Louis Vuitton Donates 10% of Earth Day Sales to Global Green USA

While not a brand I would typically be endorsing, I can totally get behind a brand willing to put their profits toward something worthwhile. I’m only just now coming to find out about Louis Vuitton’s dedication to environmental awareness, but it’s always great to hear about such a huge brand making strides to save the world we live in. So, if you were ever planning to buy something from Louis Vuitton, do it on April 22nd please!

This Thursday only, 10% of all sales made on louisvuitton.com will go toward Global Green USA’s Green Schools Initiative, dedicated to greening K-12 schools in major cities across the country. Definitely worth making a splurge!

Book Club: Gristle

I just finished reading Gristle: From Factory Farms to Food Safety (Thinking Twice About the Meat We Eat), edited by Moby and Miyun Park!

Having already pored through Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals and Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan, I still can’t decide if I’m totally disappointed by this book, or psyched about it. It read like a punchy, younger, more informal version of Omnivore’s, with a tinge of the same personalized dialogues of Eating, but was just so damn short. All of the information in it I’d already read, in much more detail in the other two books, but it had lots of amazing pull quotes, charts, and graphs, that made it a really quick read and a bit more fun. If you haven’t read up on the meat industry at all, I’d totally recommend it as an easy starter read into the subject! But man… If you’ve read anything on the subject already, you’ll be vastly disappointed by the lack of any new information. I was really hoping Moby and Miyun would be able to bring something new to the table with this little book. Not so. Not so at all.

The Canadian brand Elroy Apparel is yet another one of the growing number of clothing lines out there that shows just how exciting eco-friendly fashion can be. Launched during the Fall 07/08 season by designer Leanne McElroy, it’s all about “sophisticated street wear for a contemporary health conscious woman, who cares not only what she looks like, but what story her clothing carries” (according to the designer bio). Couldn’t have said it better myself!

With only a few choice dresses, shorts, skirts, tops, and jackets currently for sale, all of their pieces are bright and different, edgy and fashionable, yet made from entirely sustainable materials.
